The Game of Thrones prequel series is a contract production with Equity, the labor group for actors in the U.K. The trailer also confirmed the premiere date for the second season, which will hit HBO even earlier than we initially thought, on Sunday, June 16. Cast and characters
Rhaenyra's son Jacaerys (Harry Collett) volunteered to deliver messages to the other lords, and Rhaenyra agreed to send him and his brother Lucerys — Jacaerys would go to the Eyrie and Winterfell, while Lucerys went to Storm's End. To fill the void left by Sapochnik's departure, veteran TV and film director Alan Taylor is joining Season 2 as an executive producer. Taylor's directing credits include seven episodes of Game of Thrones, including Season 1's "Baelor" and Season 7's "Beyond the Wall." Sunfyre arrives in the Greens-themed trailer within the Dragonpit of King's Landing. Aegon and Sunfyre are severely wounded, while Meleys is ripped to pieces and Rhaenys burned to death. "House of the Dragon" writer Sara Hess told The Hollywood Reporter that Rhaenyra and Daemon's bond will be further explored in season 2. "Right now, we’re writing season two and figuring out, what is the nature of his relationship with Rhaenyra?" Hess said. "There are many interpretations [in George R.R. Martin’s book 'Fire & Blood'] to that." The first season of "House of the Dragon" essentially served as a prologue to the "Dance of the Dragons." It covers the last 20 years or so of King Viserys I's rule, after he names eldest child Princess Rhaenyra his heir.

Considering it's a precursor to GoT, House of the Dragon's first season had its fair share of call backs. Season 2 will deliver more on that front, too, including a return to The Wall, which sees Rhaenyra's eldest son Jace travel to in order to rally the Starks – led by Lord Cregan during this Westerosi period – to fight for the Targaryens in the war to come. Another dragon makes an appearance at the end of the Greens' trailer, but it's a familiar face. Condal confirms this pale grey beast is Seasmoke, the dragon once rode by Ser Laenor Velaryon (John MacMillan), son of Lord Corlys Velaryon (Steve Toussaint) and Rhaenyra's first husband, who was last spotted faking his death to live in the Free Cities with his lover. Seasmoke is "now aged since the last time that we saw him in the Stepstones," the showrunner says. A few figures who previously occupied bit parts will now rise to more prominent roles in season 2.
How many episodes will House of the Dragon Season 2 be?
House of the Dragon received a straight-to-series order in October 2019, with casting beginning in July 2020 and principal photography starting in April 2021 in the United Kingdom. The series premiered on August 21, 2022, with the first season consisting of ten episodes. Five days after its premiere, the series was renewed for a second season. Sapochnik departed as showrunner after the first season, leaving Condal to serve as the sole showrunner for the second season. The second season is set to premiere on June 16, 2024, consisting of 8 episodes.
The series, which takes place 200 years before the flagship show, explores the events of George R. R. Martin's Fire & Blood, telling the tale of the years leading up to the decline of House Targaryen and a major civil war, better known as the "Dance of the Dragons." Meanwhile, Freddie Fox is set to star as Ser Gwayne Hightower, who is Queen Alicent Hightower's (Olivia Cooke) brother and Otto Hightower's (Rhys Ifans) son. Yes, that means he's also uncle to King Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney), Queen Helaena (Phia Saban), and Prince Aemond (Ewan Mitchell). Also joining the cast is Abubakar Salim, who will play Alyn of Hull. Alyn is "a sailor in the Velaryon fleet who served in the Stepstones campaign," according to Variety. Meleys, ridden by Princess Rhaenys, valiantly fights against the Greens' dragons but is ultimately overpowered during the Battle at Rook's Rest.
The Brackens lose, leaving Aegon with no supporters in the Riverlands. After Luke's death, Daemon promises Rhaenyra that he will be avenged. Daemon contacts Mysaria to hire a former City Watch soldier known as Blood and a rat-catcher called Cheese to sneak into the Red Keep. They hold Alicent, Helaena and the latter's three young children captive. Blood and Cheese force Helaena to choose which of her sons will die.
The first season of the "Game of Thrones" prequel series — set nearly 200 years before the events of the flagship show and focuses on the succession war within House Targaryen — featured 10 hourlong episodes, capping off with that dramatic finale, "The Black Queen," on October 23, 2022. These scenes continue to hint at the arrival of two characters known in Martin's book as Blood and Cheese. These figures, casting for which haven't even been disclosed, will irrevocably leave their mark on House of the Dragon. The location plays a strategic role in the story of the Dance of the Dragons, as written in Martin's Fire & Blood, and it's where we'll meet various other characters, like Alys Rivers (Gayle Rankin) and Ser Simon Strong (Simon Russell Beale). "Whether it's real or rumored, it does have this supernatural aura around it that does put people off," Condal notes. "Harrenhal definitely is its own character in the show," Condal says. "It had its own character in the original books, in the original series when Arya [Maisie Williams] was playing cup bearer for Tywin [Charles Dance] there. Other than the Red Keep, it's probably the most talked-about, storied castle in Westeros, and we really wanted to pay service to it."
Based on its many trailers (we're getting to them now, don't worry), however, it'll be as melodramatic and brutal as season 1 was. Discovery's Head of Streaming J.B. Perrette confirmed season 2 would be released in June a few weeks before its official launch date was announced. House of the Dragon Season 2 will bring back many key cast members from the first season - including one particularly unexpected return - along with some newcomers. However, one major absentee will come through Paddy Considine's King Viserys I Targaryen after his death last season. Once again reported by Variety, HBO CEO Casey Bloys stated a 2024 release "is a good guess" for House of the Dragon Season 2. However, because Bloys also said the follow-up likely won't be eligible for the 2024 Emmy season, the outlet predicted the series may be back in the Summer - as supported by Deadline.
Those who paid attention to the season 1 finale will know some of what is coming in season 2. As they stood around the Painted Table in Dragonstone, Rhaenyra made mention of Cregan Stark of Winterfell, while Daemon placed a map marker on Harrenhal, the seat of House Strong. Scenes from both trailers show a rain-drenched night scene in which Daemon arrives on the back of Caraxes.
Indeed, it has many more episodes in the tank, with Martin telling BangCast that the series' executive team are "planning for the third season." Some pretty positive news, then. "The characters that I immediately wanted to get into are the characters that we didn't get to spend a ton of time with at the end of the season because of the needing to move through 20 years of narrative," Condal revealed to EW. Even though it has two less episodes than season 1, HotD season 2 will also devote more screen time to he series' supporting cast, some of whom didn't get more service last time around. House of the Dragon season 2’s story, then, picks up directly after the first (per EW).
